- The idea of consumption is portrayed in Goldsworthy's artwork 'Rowan Leaves and Hole', through the use of materials and the particular time period. Not only has Goldsworthy used ephemeral materials in his artwork, he has also chosen a significant time to create this artwork, expressing the notion of consumption. By constructing this artwork in Autumn, he has access to a vast range of colours and textures within the leaves. The concept of consumption is conveyed in the life cycle of the leaves during this time period. This is furthered in the way Goldsworthy has incorporated the leaves into his artwork. The notion of consumption is articulated from when the leaves first fall to the ground, resulting in them being used for something else other than their original purpose. This idea is then advanced in the ephemerality of the actual artwork itself, it only excises in photographic documentation, therefore resulting in the natural consumption of the artwork. His material practice is used to articulate the colours of a sun. This idea offers another view of consumption, in regards to the artwork being consumed by time. Although Goldsworthy doesn't articulate the literal meaning of consumption, he offers a complex yet challenging perception of this idea.
